In the beginning of summer, Lena and Julia energized fans with photos of them together, announcing their comeback to the stage as their legendary duet. Lena Katina talked about emotions and creative plans.
t.A.T.u. is a bright musical phenomenon from the early 2000’s which left a trail in the history of popular music forever. The band, which was created in 1999, quickly captured the hearts of millions of listeners around the world thanks to their cheeky style, brave image and memorable songs. World tours, hit after hit – and suddenly…they fell apart.
And now, after many years, Lena and Julia have announced the reunion of t.A.T.u. StarHit talked to the redhead beauty and found out all the details.
As Lena Katina put it, interesting offers happened a long time ago. In 2022, Lena and Julia performed at a sports event in Minsk after a 6 year break. The girls were met with joy and fans had hopes in the band coming back. After their concert in Belarus, Katina and Volkova came together again for a small performance. They liked working together, but each one was concentrated on her solo career. Thoughts about a full reunion of the band began to occur more often, and finally, in the summer of this year, announced their long-awaited comeback. One of the first colleagues to support this was Sergey Lazarev.
“It started with an event, and Julia and I thought it would be great to perform there. So we performed one time, then tried to do it once again. Once I came out of maternity leave, we began to get interesting offers. So we decided, why not? Many bands do something together after a long break. So we decided to try it. At first, the initiative came from management, we just made the decision that it was time to leave conflicts and grievances behind. Especially because so many years have passed. I, for instance, cannot stay mad for long. It was like all of a sudden, things began to flow”, says Lena.
The artist noted that she and Julia have a harmonious relationship now. The love of fans has always motivated them, so the singers have no fear of returning to the stage.
“There are no creative disputes now, because there is no basis. There were no fears either, because, firstly, fans always wait for t.A.T.u.’s songs from each of us, even in our solo numbers. And secondly, of course, all these years they have been waiting for us to perform together again, they asked for it. Therefore, we were sure that we would be received very warmly and well,” the singer said.
On June 19th, 2025 t.A.T.u. performed at their own concert in Yalta. It was rumored that the event almost fell through. The head of the Duma Committee on Family Issues, Nina Ostanina, wrote a letter to the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, and the chairman of the State Council, Vladimir Konstantinov, in which she indicated that t.A.T.u.’s work “contradicts traditional spiritual and moral values and can cause harm to children”. However, despite the obstacles, the concert ended up happening. Lena and Julia created a sensational event. “The crowd received us very well, the concert went wonderfully! Everyone was squealing, singing our songs, it was amazing! People were hanging off of trees because the venue could not fit all of the audience”, Katina remembers.
Despite the long break, Katina and Julia clearly felt comfortable together on stage – after all they have had a long experience with this… “Of course we both got used to working alone. But we still worked many years together, so that organic way will not go anywhere”, says Lena.
Right now Lena Katina is not yet ready to share plans. And there is nothing concrete as of now: there are talks, ideas are being generated. One thing is clear – the band is ready to make fans happy just like in the good old days.
“We have plans, but, I think, it is too early to talk about them. In order not to give hope, I prefer to stay silent for now”, the singer smiles.
Collaborations with other artists are not an exception, but for now the stars are concentrating on their duet. “We are a fit together. But anything is possible!”, hints Katina.
The singers plan to conquer not only the domestic public, so fans abroad can safely hope for a tour from their idols. “Of course, we plan to widen the geographical performances. We are an international band, after all, so, I hope that we will have concerts not only in Russia, but abroad as well”, shared Lena.
By the way, t.A.T.u. is still remembered and loved abroad. The other day, the American label Interscope announced a reissue of the band’s album Dangerous and Moving in honor of its 20th anniversary. The record, which was released in 2005, will receive an updated version on double vinyl in a bright yellow color. It will include 24 songs, including several in Russian. The reissue was supported by Sting himself. The British musician published the announcement on his social networks and tagged Lena Katina.
Having returned to work in the band, Lena and Julia do not forget about their solo careers. Katina admitted that her personal project is still her priority. “My focus will always be on my solo project. I have been working on it for a very long time and continue to do so. And Julia also does not stop working on her solo project. So now we need to somehow find a balance between the solo project and creativity in the band,” the artist concluded.
