I flew to Mexico City specifically for this concert. The show started at 9:30PM, I left my hotel at 5:45PM, thinking there was time to go get a drink at a rooftop restaurant before heading over to the show. My hotel was located in PolancoI, only 9 miles (about 14.5km) from La Maraka. However, with the early evening traffic being in full swing, it was extremely slow to get around. The traffic was so slow that I skipped the drinks portion and decided to go straight to the venue. What would have been a 15 minute ride without traffic ended up taking 2 hours.
Once I arrived, walking out of the Uber, I saw t.A.T.u.’s video playing on a giant screen above the venue. It was pretty cool to see your favorite band in such a large presence in public. I have never experience a t.A.T.u. concert in real life before, so seeing their video being played at a venue where other people were going to see them was very exciting. It felt like I was a teenager again. Walking into the venue, there was a large t.A.T.u. poster hanging by the entrance, which again, was so cool to see. Once inside, walking through the hallway, I saw one more t.A.T.u. poster displayed before getting into the main space.

It was around 8PM, an hour and a half before the start of the show, and the general admission area on the first floor was almost half way full. Though the area I was situated it would have been fine, I was lucky to find out that there were tables with seats available on the second floor. Once the venue staff showed me where the seating was upstairs, I decided to stay in that area as the view was much better.
From the second floor I saw there was a screen by the entrance showing upcoming shows, with t.A.T.u. being displayed. In addition, the main stage screen and additional screens on the second floor also showed the upcoming show promo images of the girls (the screen upstairs were also used during the show to show closeups of the girls while they performed).
The girls started the show right at 9:30. The band played an intro that got the crowed hyped up and the venue exploded with cheers and screams when the girls walked out to the start of the “All The Things She Said”.

There were a few memorable moments throughout the show:
- Before the start of the show, there was an announcement made telling the audience there was no jumping allowed. I feel like this slightly reduced the energy of the crowd as they could not express themselves to the fullest during the concert.
- 220
Their team was a little slow in getting their microphone stands at the beginning of this number.
Lena: “So, the next song is in Russian. And who were there yesterday knows which one it’s gonna be. And we’re gonna need our stands please…”
Julia: [In Russian] “Give us the stands for our microphones, please…”
When the stand were brought out and set in front of each of the girls, Julia asked for them to be swapped. [In Russian] “The smaller one for me and the larger one for Lena.”
Unlike all the previous performances of this song, the girls did not put on hats this time. It may have had to do with them having their hair up – Julia’s was in a bun and Lena’s was in a ponytail.
After singing 220, Julia and Lena took off their jackets, having to wait for a few seconds for their team to take them from the girls.
Julia: [In Russian]: “Our guys are a little relaxed today for some reason.”
Lena: “Our guys got a little bit relaxed, so they forget when we need then stands and when we need our jackets to be picked up.”
- Polchasa
Lena asked for the crowd to turn on their flashlights for the song. However, many of the audience members did not participate in doing this. Only about half of the venue turned on their flashlights. At the end of the song, someone in the audience could be heard screaming, “Kiss, kiss, kiss!”
- After You & I Julia and Lena interacted with the crowd, acknowledging the people upstairs as well. During this time, someone in the VIP area gave them little stuffed animals. Julia mentioned that she was seeing the same faces as from the night before, and Lena asked if they are going to come every single night to the show. “We gotta change something in our program, I guess…Well, not really. Because we have it really set up well.”
- Nas Ne Dagoniat was broken into two parts. After performing the majority of the song, there was a music interlude from the band, followed by t.A.T.u. introducing the band members. After this part was complete they went back into “Nas Ne Dagoniat”, performing one more part.
- During the show, Lena looked down at the list of songs many times to figure out what was next.
- The entire show lasted an hour and fifteen minutes, which included the band’s intro, talking to the audiences as well as as performing all the songs, along with the encore of All About Us. In my opinion, the show felt too short – they could have added 5 more songs to make the show feel complete.
- There could have been more songs sung in English. I was surprised to see songs that have English counterparts performed in only in Russian. Though the audience did not seem to mind it, as the energy was high the entire time, it made it seem like the show was not prepared for properly. It seemed as if the tour was not expected and by the time they knew they would be pefroming in Mexico, the girls did not have time to record English version vocals of the songs. Even as a native Russian, going to a t.A.T.u. concert in a non-Russian speaking concert and hearing songs that have English counterparts being performed in Russian was disappointing. Having said this, since there were so many Russian songs, I felt like the could have performed “Ya Soshla S Uma” in Russian as the encore instead of a second “All About Us”. I don’t know if the Russian rules still apply to them overseas, but if not, this would have been a perfect opportunity to perform “Ya Social S Uma”. This is the same for “Malchik Gay”, which the crowed desperately wanted them to sing.
- After t.A.T.u. left the stage for the first time, the crowed started to chant “Otra! (Another one!)” and then started chanting “Malchik Gay, Malchik Gay!”. After the encore of “All About Us” and Lena finishing speaking to the audience, the crowd once again began to chant “Malchik Gay!”. After the show was over, someone from the audience said, “I was hoping they would sing ‘Malchik Gay’, that would have been amazing.”
- Overall, the show was solid. The sound good, lights, and graphics were great. During the entirety of the show, Julia and Lena did a great job interacting with the audience and keeping them engaged, including the people on the second floor. The guitarist was also amazing, especially during “Polchasa”. His solo was very good and made the song so much more powerful. He also did an amazing job during the last part of “Loves Me Not”.
- After leaving the venue, the outside street was lined with tables selling unofficial t.A.T.u. merch. There was everything you could imagine, including t-shirts, posters, hats, pins, and more. The designs were actually quite good. People were crowded around the tables buying items and it was exciting to see the hype that t.A.T.u. were able to create.
